Your eyes sink
Deeper and farther
Into your skull.
The emptiness
Replacing them
Is the chasm
Between us.
You aren’t even a ghost
Of what I remember,
Just bones cast with
Flesh in macabre
Parody of who
You were.
It’s hard to look at.
This disgusting end is
An exit you don’t deserve.
I weep not only for loss,
But for the sacrifices made in our name.
Did you take joy in denying yourself
To provide for us?
You chided me for playing in the rain,
But I’d liked to have shown you the stars
At midnight the way I saw them,
Or the crimson sky at the
Start and end of my days.
Floating between madness and silence,
The tether holding you here
Has frayed to its final strand.
Where will you drift to when it breaks?
To your homeland, or an ancestral place?
Or will you float through time to see
Us once more before passing on?
So it goes.
